Ms. Castro chose CIA over Fidel

Between Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl, it would seem that the Cuban communism is a family affair, but not so when you look to little sister Juanita, now 76. She has lived in Miami – in exile from her home – since 1964, and just revealed a little known connection to the CIA.

Juanita CastroOf course it’s no coincidence that the revelation came the day before her memoirs about her dictatorial brothers (“Fidel and Raúl, My Brothers: The Secret History”) were published. The book is in Spanish and was written in collaboration with María Antonieta Collins, a Mexican journalist. The announcement of Ms. Castro’s involvement with the CIA was made on a Spanish television channel, Univision-Noticias 23, which aired an interview with her on Sunday.

We find out that originally, Ms. Castro supported her brother’s takeover of the government but then realized that everything was not so hunky dory when Fidel took to executing those not in line with his Communist ideals.

Before fleeing from Cuba, Ms. Castro had already begun to show her disapproval for the new government by helping and sheltering the people her brother’s regime was persecuting. One day, she was approached by someone friendly with both her and Fidel. This person was the carrier of a CIA proposal that Ms. Castro work for them.

Juanita Castro accepted the offer and began working with the CIA against her brother. She risked her own life while saving the lives of others, but for the last forty+ years she’s been living and working in Miami, where she ran a local pharmacy.

She hasn’t exchanged words with either brother since the mid-sixties.
