SENTENCING OF ERSTWHILE DUTCH FIGHTER PILOT FOUND GUILTY OF SPYING FOR RUSSIA

Convicted Russian spy Chris Vaneker, an ex F-16 pilot in the Dutch Air Force, last month received a five year prison term from a court in The Hague. Specifically, his espionage conviction entailed the transmission of classified information to a Russian diplomat. According to the court, Vaneker initiated contact with the Russian delegation’s military attaché at its embassy in The Hague. His asking price for the state secrets he was peddling was set at half-a-million euros. Both Vaneker and the attaché were taken into custody this past March following the arrangement of a meeting at a restaurant in Scheveningen. The Russian’s diplomatic immunity effected his release shortly thereafter. Investigators could not ascertain the precise intelligence turned over to Russia. The court concluded it must have been classified due to the attention it elicited from a foreign government. An appeal of the Vaneker conviction is anticipated.
