Wahhab’s Bodyguard Arrested On Charges Of Being Israeli Spy

The military court in Lebanon brought charges of espionage against Jalal A.D., the personal bodyguard of Arab Tawhid Party leader Wiam Wahhab, on Wednesday, June 15th, after he came under suspicion by Hezbollah of collaboration with Israel. According to the pro-Hezbollah publication Al-Akhbar, Wahhab’s security chief was taken into custody by Hezbollah and brought to Beirut’s Southern Dahiyeh suburb for interrogation. The paper reported that the suspect’s confession disclosed that he began working for the Israelis in 1994 and was given training by their operatives in the Palestinian territories, where he had travelled a number of times. He allegedly divulged also that he passed on to Israeli intelligence data concerning the positions and offices of Lebanese army troops and Hezbollah members. The newspaper’s account included the search of the suspect’s home in Jahiliyya turning up communication equipment it attributed to Israeli intelligence. It went on to raise the possibility of the suspect’s connection to the car bomb deaths of Islamic Jihad leaders Mahmoud and Nidal al-Majzoub in Saida five years ago.
Al-Akhbar newspaper stated that Hezbollah conducted its probe with the full cooperation of Wahhab, who is a fervent adherent of the Shia group and Syria. The arrest of Wahhab’s bodyguard is only one of a number made in the past year stemming from an investigation into a purported Israeli spy ring operating in Lebanon.
